This reminds me of the lambda calculus expression (\x.xx)(\x.xx), but I don't know clojure well enough to tell for sure if this is what's happening. I also don't see why the aforementioned expression would result in a stack overflow, so maybe you're doing some trickery with the Y-combinator? This answer interests me and an explanation would be nice.
