It's slightly less weird when you consider that something of the form a[b] is just a generic expression with head a (index 0 ) and element b (index 1 ), and functions are just special kinds of expression (actually, it would be more correct to say that functions aren't expressions at all, but are simply rules for transforming expressions which usually have form f[x...] ). :)
