Feb 1, 2021 at 13:47 comment added GammaFunction @jimfan That's Bash's secret: everything is a word. echo foo is the same as 'echo' 'foo' is the same as "echo" "foo" is the same as x=echo y=foo; $x $y. Quoting just changes whether splitting or globbing happens.
