@akostadinov I've added an explanation to the answer. You're right about *''. '%x'%$& consists of two parts. $& is the last matched string returned by gsub; here this is a 2-digit binary string representing a single RNA base. '%' is a short form of sprintf, which is used to convert between string formats. The format specifier x causes the argument ($&) to be converted to hex.
