@Grimmy because I need it to start at -1 so that the first ++ results in it evaluating to 0. Otherwise, I'd need to subtract 1 off of it before the final division. That would add back the two bytes you're gaining.

What’s the point of $#j when you don’t use @j ? Change both $#j to $j for -2.
