seems you'd need to make full header with all information like dimensions, palette etc., because file prints this information. With your relevant code it only says "data".

Fail point. I didn't manage to find a way to fool the file utility by pre-pending the whole thing with the relevant code (i.e. decimals 137 80 78 71 13 10 26 10 ). Perhaps you might know of a way? ;-)

PNG image is not "ASCII text, with no line terminators", as said by file . It's a .png file, but not PNG image.
