You can save another two bytes by moving i+= to the beginning of the nested ternary expression, and ending it with -1:1:0 .

Which Ruby version? The 2.3.3 I have demands parenthesis around parameter when code block follows: .each_cons(2){…} . In change you can save by replacing .each_char → .chars .
