@640KB haven't found shorter yet.. I was also experimenting the other way round to have the alphabetical order, not that far but still longer. If you have an idea with it: for($c=a;$c!=aa;$c++)($i=count(preg_split("~$c~i",$argn))-1)?$r.=$i:0;echo$r; for 77 bytes

Nine one. I read this and was like "oh yeah, that's count_chars()" . There should be something cheaper than preg_replace() and strtolower() but probably isn't!
