@ɐɔıʇǝɥʇuʎs No. The addition operator + has higher precedence than the assignment operator = , so 1+c=getchar() is equivalent to (1+c)=getchar() , which does not compile because (1+c) is not an lvalue.

I don't know C well enough, but wouldn't while(1+c=getchar()) work?
