(1) Replacing 4-space indentation with a single space will save quite a few bytes. (2) Can you replace except NameError with just except ? (3) Two-character function names can be renamed to one-character names. (4) There are a few places where you have assignments that have spaces around the = . (5) if t[0]=='c' can be replaced with if'c'==t[0] .
