Variables are interpolated inside double quotes, so "http://xkcd.com/".$x can become "http://xkcd.com/$x" saving one byte :)

Welcome to PPCG! I think you can remove the test whether $x==404 because the other code will fail on the 404 response... Also you can replace throw new Exception by a die call and remove the brackets around throw new Exception("") /die because it is only a single statement
